Broken Top’s History
Broken Top was planned in the early 1990s by Broken Top Limited Partnership, an investor group based in Portland, San Francisco and Japan. In 1990 and 1991 the developer chose the design team of Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish for the golf course, passing over a competing bid from Jack Nicklaus. Wadsworth Golf Course Construction built the course, with the layout finalized in 1991 and most construction happening through 1992. The course was completed on October 31, 1992, and Broken Top Club held its grand opening on July 4, 1993.
The neighborhood grew in phases over the following decades. Deschutes County GIS records show 68 recorded plats under the Broken Top name, covering the original phases, golf tracts, Painted Ridge, golf townhomes and courtyard sections, which is why the map above shows a combined boundary rather than a single simple lot line.
Broken Top vs. Tetherow vs. Widgi Creek

| Tetherow | David McLay Kidd, high desert links style | Course opened 2008 |
| Widgi Creek | Robert Muir Graves, public access, river and forest | Course opened late 1980s |
All three sit along or near Century Drive in the SW Bend golf corridor, with different membership structures and price points.
What to Know Before You Buy in Broken Top

- Winter access along Century Drive can be slower in heavy snow years, worth test driving before you commit.

Relocating to Broken Top
If you’re moving to Bend from out of state, Broken Top offers an established golf community close to downtown, Mt. Tiffany can walk you through club membership questions, HOA structures across the different phases, and how Broken Top compares to nearby communities before your visit.
For Buyers and Sellers
Buying in Broken Top: Because the neighborhood covers 68 recorded plats built over multiple decades, home style, lot size and HOA dues vary widely. A local walk through the specific phase you’re considering matters more here than in a single-phase subdivision.
Selling in Broken Top: Golf course frontage, view lines and proximity to the clubhouse all affect value differently depending on the phase. Tiffany can pull comparable sales specific to your section of the neighborhood rather than a blended average across the whole area.
